THE STORY BEHIND
YRSA

I.P.E. Hartmann’s – Yrsa is originally written as an overture to a play performed in the theater. The play is about old tales from the Scandinavian mythology which describes the Vikings and there gods and kings. And the story of Yrsa is no different!

When the little girl becomes a young beautiful woman, the German queen tricks the Danish Viking to marry Yrsa, only too late to discover that she is his unknown child! After that discovery, the Danish Viking kills himself! After a while, also the German Queen regrets her deed and kills herself.

To make matters worse: At the wedding night, Yrsa got pregnant with the Danish Viking. And when she found out, that it was her own father! – neither she couldn’t live with the shame and wanted to kill herself… But right before throwing herself out from a cliff, an ancient god, Frey, appears in the distance.
